Comedy Special Reviews
Rating: 9.69 / 10
Specials don't get much better than this. In this nonstop laughing spree, Ari shows the world what a New York Comic is capable of if they stick to one theme. It is presented in the Edinburgh style.
This is the comedy equivalent of a concept-album. Ari tells stories from the bible, growing up Jewish, and leaving the religion. He consulted his bits with rabbis.
Ari Shaffir spent about 5 years touring this special around the world. You can tell. This is a finely polished special.
Shane Gillis - Beautiful Dogs
Rating: 8.4 / 10
Shane Gillis' ability to flow in and out of impressions is second to none in mainstream comedy at the moment.
Shane discusses:
Visiting George Washington's plantation
Why his uncle is the happiest person he knows
Why Shane is becoming an old prick
Fingering
Sam Morril: Same Time Tomorrow
Rating: 8.1 / 10
Sam followed up his breakthrough special, I Got This, with a short, but solid set of jokes.
Nimesh Patel: Testicular Cancer Comedy Special
Rating: 7.19 / 10
Nimesh audibly punches listeners left and right in this special. Wow, the redirects are nice throughout this.
VERY DARK HUMORED THROUGHOUT
Dan Cummins: Trying to get Better
Rating: 7 / 10
Dan set forth to offend all listeners with this.
I got offended by the owl extinction bit.
Dan is attempting to ride the edge of offensiveness in an admirable attempt.
Watched the whole thing.
Mateo Lane: The Advice Special
Rating: 6.4 / 10
One of the best crowd work specials of the past couple years. (Audiences are growing tired of crowd work.)
Rating: 6.32 / 10
Look out for this comic's next special. Still a little early in his development, but a lot of potential.
Geoffrey Asmus: The Only Funny White Man
Rating: 6.19 / 10
Solid debut special from a younger comic. He is one to watch in the coming years.
Rating: 6 / 10
Watched 80% of this. I fell asleep somewhere in this.
This special gains artistic merit because David James pursued through adversity in the filming process.
Rating: 6 / 10
Watchable all the way through. No big laughs and nothing very memorable.
Michelle Wolf: It's Great To Be Here
Rating: 5.3 / 10
A solid multi-part special in the age of low attention spans.
Rating: 5 / 10
Watched about half. Kinda got bored. Watched 20 more minutes than the average turd attention special.
Josh Johnson: I am Not an Alpha Male
Rating: 4 / 10
Josh is a younger comic who you should follow. His name has been showing up a lot in the mainstream comedy world over the past couple of years.
Not a terrible intro, but the comedy central plug feels less artistic than the intros you see across independent YouTube specials.
Keep in mind, this is a 6 year old special, so Josh has had much more time for development.
Rating: 4 / 10
The length of story is worth noting, as this is a lot of talking for one story.
Not many comics do this.
Got bored after 5 minutes.
Mark Normand: Soup to Nuts
Rating: 3 / 10
Tuned out within 7 minutes of watching. Couldn't finish watching after 3 attempts and only 21 minutes watched.
Mark is doing borderline hacky bits at times, except he's hacking himself because the bits are very similar to his breakthrough YouTube special.
Rating: 2 / 10
Tried watching, but the voice doesn't match up with the audio.
Tried listening. Got Bored.
